1964 Jeff Hayes Corvette - BAT

1964 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STING RAY — JEFF HAYES CUSTOM

540 HP LS3 HOT CAM | custom ART MORRISON CHASSIS | 4L70E OVERDRIVE | 310 MILES SINCE BUILD

MOTORVAULT is proud to offer this 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray built by Jeff Hayes, combining the unmistakable shape and character of a midyear Corvette with the stance, performance and level of finish for which Hayes-built Corvettes have become known.

Completed approximately three years ago and showing just 310 miles since completion, this example has seen remarkably limited use following its build.

The significance of a Jeff Hayes Corvette extends beyond the individual components used. His cars have a distinct identity. The body remains unmistakably Corvette, but the proportions, stance, wheel placement and details are carefully reworked around a modern chassis and drivetrain. The result looks familiar from a distance but becomes increasingly different as you get closer.

This example captures that philosophy particularly well, pairing a black exterior with a metallic blue Stinger-style hood treatment, coordinating custom blue leather interior and subtle blue accents incorporated into the tires. Underneath is the familiar Hayes combination of an Custom Art Morrison Sport Chassis, 540-horsepower LS3 Hot Cam V8 and GM 4L70E automatic overdrive, along with modern suspension, steering and Wilwood braking.

BUILD HIGHLIGHTS

The heart of the build is a 540-horsepower GM LS3 Hot Cam V8 backed by a GM 4L70E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The combination provides modern fuel-injected performance along with an overdrive gear that makes the car considerably more usable at highway speeds.

Underneath is an Art Morrison Sport Chassis incorporating modern suspension geometry, adjustable Strange Engineering coilovers and power rack-and-pinion steering. Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors provide braking capability appropriate for the drivetrain and chassis.

Hayes also incorporated the amenities that make one of these cars genuinely enjoyable away from a show field. The Corvette is equipped with Vintage Air heat and air conditioning, power steering, power windows, a power-operated hood, Bluetooth audio and modern AutoMeter instrumentation.

The result is not simply a vintage Corvette with a larger engine. The drivetrain, chassis, braking, steering and power equipment were conceived as part of the same build.

THE JEFF HAYES DESIGN

The stance is perhaps the defining element of a Jeff Hayes Corvette.

Rather than simply lowering a stock C2 and fitting larger wheels, the entire car is visually balanced around its new proportions. The Schott wheels fill the openings, the body sits tightly over them and the polished side exhaust runs almost seamlessly beneath the rocker panels.

From the side, there is very little visual space between the body and pavement. From the rear, the width of the tire footprint gives the Sting Ray a substantially more planted appearance than the original car.

At the same time, Hayes preserves the details that make a midyear Corvette immediately recognizable. Chrome bumpers and brightwork, fender vents, Sting Ray badging, quad taillamps, concealed headlights and the fastback roofline remain central to the design.

The modifications don't compete with the original shape. They emphasize it.

EXTERIOR

The body is finished in deep gloss black, a color that works particularly well with the sculpted surfaces of the C2.

A metallic blue Stinger-style treatment runs through the center of the hood and raised hood section, outlined by fine black detailing. Rather than carrying graphics throughout the entire body, the blue is concentrated in a few carefully chosen areas.

That same color appears inside the car and around the tire sidewalls, giving the entire build a consistent visual theme.

The original Corvette design cues remain prominent. Concealed quad headlights maintain the uninterrupted shape of the nose when closed and raise to expose the four individual lamps. Chrome bumpers, bright window surrounds, exterior door hardware, fender vents and Corvette badging provide contrast against the black body.

The polished side-exit exhaust is incorporated beneath the rocker area with full-length perforated heat shields. Rather than appearing as an accessory hanging beneath the car, the side exhaust becomes part of the lower body line and contributes significantly to the Hayes stance.

ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN

Opening the forward-hinged power hood reveals a highly detailed 6.2-liter GM LS3 Hot Cam V8 producing 540 horsepower.

The engine is equipped with a polished intake assembly, electronic fuel injection, Corvette-script finned valve covers, tubular headers and a polished serpentine accessory drive.

The installation itself is as important as the individual components. Wiring, plumbing and accessories have been carefully integrated so the engine remains the visual centerpiece of the compartment.

Power is delivered through a GM 4L70E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission to the rear Schott wheels.

The LS3 and 4L70E combination gives the car the starting characteristics, reliability and drivability expected from a modern fuel-injected drivetrain while retaining the naturally aspirated V8 character appropriate for a Corvette.

Even the underside of the hood has been completely finished and upholstered, another example of the attention carried into areas that aren't immediately visible.

ART MORRISON CHASSIS & SUSPENSION

Beneath the C2 body is a Custom Art Morrison Sport Chassis, providing the foundation around which the rest of the car was built.

The chassis incorporates modern suspension geometry with tubular components, Strange Engineering adjustable coilovers, front and rear sway bars and power rack-and-pinion steering.

This is a significant part of what separates a Hayes build from a Corvette that has simply accumulated modifications over time.

The chassis, suspension, steering, wheels and body position were designed to work together. The low ride height gives the car its visual attitude, while the underlying hardware provides a much more contemporary feel from behind the wheel.

You still sit behind the sculpted hood of a midyear Corvette and hear the V8 through side pipes only inches away. The difference is how the car responds underneath you.

WILWOOD BRAKES, WHEELS & TIRES

Large Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors sit behind the polished Schott wheels.

The wheel placement is central to the Hayes look. Rather than appearing as oversized wheels installed beneath an otherwise stock Corvette, they sit deeply within the body with minimal wheel gap, giving the entire car a low and planted appearance.

A blue accent incorporated around the tire sidewalls is a small but particularly effective detail, visually connecting the wheel package to the metallic blue hood treatment and interior.

INTERIOR

The blue exterior accent becomes the dominant theme once the doors are opened.

The cabin has been comprehensively finished in custom blue leather, including the seating, dashboard, door panels and surrounding trim. Contrasting stitching and polished details provide additional definition without losing the recognizable architecture of the C2 cockpit.

A carbon-fiber-style instrument surround houses AutoMeter instrumentation, including the digital odometer currently showing approximately 310 miles.

The interior remains recognizably Corvette. The twin-cockpit dashboard forms, round instrumentation, bucket seating and center console maintain the character of the original car while incorporating considerably more modern materials and functionality.

Importantly, this was also designed to be usable.

Vintage Air heat and air conditioning, power windows, power steering, a power-operated hood, Bluetooth audio and a backup camera bring modern convenience into the cabin without changing the overall character of the car.

POWER EQUIPMENT & COMFORT

One of the advantages of the Hayes approach is that these cars aren't designed solely around appearance or horsepower. This Corvette is equipped with power steering, power windows and a power-operated hood, along with Vintage Air heat and air conditioning. An AM/FM Bluetooth audio system provides modern connectivity, while the integrated backup camera adds another useful feature that would have been unimaginable in the original C2.

Combined with electronic fuel injection and the 4L70E automatic overdrive transmission, these features make the car considerably easier to use than an original midyear Corvette.

310 MILES SINCE COMPLETION

This Jeff Hayes build was completed approximately three years ago and the AutoMeter odometer currently displays approximately 310 miles. That exceptionally limited use is an important part of this particular car.

Rather than an older restomod that has accumulated years of mileage and subsequent changes, this Corvette remains a relatively fresh example of the finished Hayes design.

The 310-mile reading represents mileage shown since completion of the build and is not represented as the total historical mileage of the underlying 1964 Corvette.

WHY WE LOVE IT

What makes this Corvette special isn't any single component. It's the way the entire car sits and feels as one design.

Jeff Hayes has developed a recognizable interpretation of the C2 Corvette, and this car demonstrates why. The wheel placement, ride height, side exhaust, body lines and proportions all work together. Nothing looks like it was selected independently and added later.

Walk around it and the car continually changes character. From the front, it appears extremely low and wide. In profile, the polished side exhaust visually stretches the body between the wheels. From the rear, the tire footprint gives the fastback shape considerably more presence than an original C2.

Then there are the details: the metallic blue Stinger treatment, full blue leather interior, matching tire accents, restrained chrome and carefully finished engine compartment.

Underneath that design is a serious mechanical package: 540-horsepower LS3 Hot Cam power, 4L70E automatic overdrive, an Art Morrison chassis, Strange Engineering adjustable suspension, power rack-and-pinion steering and Wilwood brakes.

And despite all of that modernization, the experience remains centered around the Corvette. You still look across a sculpted C2 hood, sit low within the twin-cockpit interior and hear a naturally aspirated V8 exiting through side pipes just outside the doors.

That combination of design, stance and feel is what makes a Jeff Hayes Corvette different.

With the build completed approximately three years ago and just 310 miles showing since completion, this example has seen remarkably limited use since it left the builder.
