WHY WE LOVE IT
There is a significant difference between a restored Corvette and one that has simply survived.
This 1964 Corvette Convertible falls firmly into the latter category. It combines the desirable L76 327/365HP V8 and 4 speed manual transmission with 43,370 miles, substantial original finishes, documented ownership extending back to 1970, and third party affirmation of its original engine.
More importantly, its history has not been reconstructed solely from stories passed between owners. The car is accompanied by a 1970 Ohio registration, period purchase notation, later title documentation, a signed and notarized statement from its previous caretaker, and a Classic Car Affirmation Service engine certificate.
The result is an unusually honest mid year Corvette whose preservation is as important to its story as its specification.
PROVENANCE & LONG TERM OWNERSHIP
An original 1970 Ohio registration card identifies Joseph Kish as the registered owner of VIN 40867S100542 and shows a plate issue date of March 25, 1970.
Accompanying the registration is a handwritten notation recording receipt of $3,100 from Joseph Kish for the 1964 Corvette, referencing the same serial number.
The Corvette later remained in Kish family ownership for decades. According to a signed and notarized July 30, 2024 statement from Greg Pawluk of Sunnyside Automotive Group, the car was acquired from the wife of its long term owner after her husband's passing.
She advised Pawluk that her husband had purchased the Corvette in 1970 from an individual she believed to have been the original owner. The surviving 1970 registration and purchase notation support the documented portion of that history.
Pawluk further states that the Corvette had gone unused for approximately 20 years or more. When he first encountered it, it remained in the garage where it had been housed for many years, with the rear wheels removed and the car resting on blocks.
Rather than subjecting the Corvette to a comprehensive restoration, the decision was made to preserve it.
ORIGINALITY & PRESERVATION
The previous caretaker describes the Corvette as “highly original” and states that much of the paint is original, along with the engine compartment, underside, chrome, and much of the interior.
The car was sympathetically detailed rather than aggressively restored or refinished.
Included caretaker notes specifically discuss preservation of the single stage lacquer paint and caution against aggressive wet sanding, cutting compounds, or excessive polishing. A light, non aggressive polish was performed with the goal of retaining the character and integrity of the existing finish.
These handwritten and typed instructions are a small but particularly interesting part of the historical file. They demonstrate the preservation minded approach taken with the Corvette rather than simply making a retrospective claim that the car is original.
Both the factory hardtop and soft top are reported by the previous caretaker as remaining with the car.
ORIGINAL ENGINE AFFIRMATION
In March 2024, the Corvette was submitted to Classic Car Affirmation Service, LLC (CCAS) for evaluation of its cylinder case and engine pad.
CCAS issued its Cylinder Case Engine Pad Affirmation Certificate on March 27, 2024.
The certificate records:
VIN: 40867S100542
Casting Number: 3782870
Casting Date: I33
Assembly Date/Stamp: F0905RE
VIN Derivative: 4100542
CCAS Registration: 032724
According to the certificate, the cylinder case pad stampings evaluated by CCAS satisfied its requirements for legitimacy based upon the organization's Corvette research library.
The accompanying CCAS correspondence further states that the Corvette's cylinder case satisfied its standards and data for affirmation.
This documentation supports the car retaining its original, VIN derivative stamped L76 327/365HP engine.
MECHANICAL RECOMMISSIONING
Following its extended period of storage, the Corvette was mechanically recommissioned while making an effort to preserve its originality.
The previous caretaker documents the following work:
Fuel tank flushed
Carburetor rebuilt
Brakes gone through
Fluids changed
Mechanical systems inspected and recommissioned
Sympathetic detailing performed without overly invasive techniques
The accompanying caretaker statement describes the Corvette as a strong performer following this work.
MILEAGE
The Corvette currently shows 43,370 miles. Importantly, the documentary trail supports the mileage representation. The June 29, 2023 Ohio Certificate of Title records 43,370 miles with the mileage notation ACTUAL. The subsequent Indiana Certificate of Title likewise records 43,370 / ACTUAL and carries no title brands.
Accordingly, MOTORVAULT represents the mileage as 43,370 actual miles based upon the accompanying title documentation.
TIRES
The Corvette rides on Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread F70-15 tires.
Front
Date: 2016
Tread Depth: 10/32"
Rear
Date: 2016
Tread Depth: 10/32"
While tread depth remains substantial, buyers should consider tire age when determining suitability for extended or high speed road use.
