HISTORY

The current owner’s connection with the Plymouth GTX goes back decades. He owned a GTX when he was younger and later set out to find another example. This car was ultimately located for sale on the East Coast and was finished in green when acquired by the current owner.

Its surviving fender tag provides an interesting look into the car’s earlier history, confirming that the green exterior was itself a later color change. The GTX originally left the St. Louis assembly plant finished in FT6 Burnt Tan Metallic with P6XA charcoal and black premium vinyl seating and V6W white longitudinal graphics.

Following its acquisition, the car underwent an extensive restoration through American Classics Restoration in Anderson, Indiana. The restoration shop was owned by a longtime friend of the owner’s family, allowing the work to be completed at a substantial discount from normal commercial restoration rates.

Approximately $68,375 in restoration related payments are documented during 2018 and 2019. Because of the relationship with the shop and discounted labor involved, those figures do not necessarily represent the retail cost of completing the same work. The owner estimates reproducing the restoration today would represent an investment exceeding $100,000.

During the restoration, the GTX was refinished in its current yellow and black configuration and received extensive drivetrain, braking, suspension and fuel system upgrades designed to create a more capable and usable version of the classic big block Plymouth.

The owner believes the car has traveled fewer than approximately 300 miles since the restoration was completed.

END End of sales codes

The fender tag confirms that this is a genuine U Code 440 GTX with factory N96 Air Grabber equipment.

The current yellow exterior, black vinyl roof, black graphics, green interior and manual transmission reflect changes made during the car’s history and restoration rather than its original factory configuration.

ENGINE

The GTX is powered by a 1970 Chrysler 440 RB based big block that has been substantially upgraded from its original specification. The block carries casting number 2536430 and partial VIN stamping 0C143567.

This stamping does not correspond with the GTX’s VIN of RS23U0G130392, confirming that the currently installed block is not the original numbers matching engine.

According to the owner, the 440 was bored .030 inch over and fitted with a forged stroker rotating assembly to produce approximately 500 cubic inches.

ENGINE EQUIPMENT

• 1970 Chrysler 440 RB block
• Casting number 2536430
• Partial VIN stamping 0C143567
• Non numbers matching engine block
• Approximately 500 CID displacement
• .030 inch overbore
• Forged rotating assembly
• Forged steel crankshaft
• Trick Flow aluminum cylinder heads
• COMP Cams hydraulic lifter camshaft
• Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake manifold
• FAST electronic fuel injection
• FAST fuel pressure regulator and underhood gauge
• Tubular exhaust headers
• Chrome valve covers
• Super Commando style air cleaner assembly

The FAST EFI system is concealed beneath the traditional round air cleaner, preserving much of the vintage Mopar appearance while providing modern electronic fuel management.

TRANSMISSION

The factory D32 automatic transmission has been replaced by a TREMEC TKO 600 5 speed manual transmission. The transmission carries TR3550 11 family markings along with assembly number TCET5008, identifying it as a TKO 600 configuration.

TREMEC TKO 600

• 600 lb ft torque capacity
• 26 spline input
• 31 spline output
• 2.87 first gear
• 1.89 second gear
• 1.28 third gear
• 1.00 fourth gear
• 0.64 fifth gear overdrive
• 2.56 reverse

A Pistol Grip shifter maintains the appropriate visual character inside the cabin while the 0.64 overdrive provides considerably more relaxed highway cruising than the original three speed automatic configuration.

REAR AXLE & DRIVELINE

A Dana 60 rear axle is currently installed, with a DTS Service identification decal visible on the housing. The Dana 60, TREMEC TKO 600 and approximately 500 CID big block create a driveline well suited to the increased output of the current engine combination. The surviving fender tag does not establish the currently installed Dana 60 as factory equipment, and MOTORVAULT does not represent it as original to the vehicle.

SUSPENSION & BRAKES

The chassis received a number of upgrades as part of the build.

CURRENT EQUIPMENT

• QA1 suspension components
• KYB Gas a Just shock absorbers
• Traditional rear leaf spring suspension
• Wilwood brake components
• Drilled and slotted brake rotors
• Braided brake hoses
• Power brake assist

These changes complement the increased engine performance and modern manual transmission while retaining the fundamental layout and character of the B Body platform.

EXHAUST & FUEL SYSTEM

Tubular headers feed a full dual exhaust system fitted with Flowmaster mufflers. An aluminum fuel tank is installed beneath the rear of the car along with updated fuel plumbing supporting the FAST electronic fuel injection system.

AIR GRABBER

The surviving fender tag confirms N96 Fresh Air equipment, identifying this as a factory Air Grabber equipped GTX. Air Grabber related underhood equipment remains present, including the hood mounted air door assembly. This is therefore a genuine factory N96 GTX rather than a car on which an Air Grabber hood was simply added during restoration.

EXTERIOR

The GTX is currently finished in yellow with a contrasting black vinyl roof and black longitudinal GTX graphics.

EXTERIOR DETAILS

• Yellow exterior finish
• Black vinyl roof
• Black longitudinal GTX graphics
• Air Grabber hood
• Hood pins
• GTX quarter panel badging
• Chrome front and rear bumpers
• Chrome window trim
• Chrome exterior mirror
• Cragar S/S wheels
• Raised white letter tires

The present exterior configuration differs from the original specification identified on the fender tag. The car was originally finished in FT6 Burnt Tan Metallic with V6W white longitudinal stripes. It had been refinished in green by the time the current owner located the car on the East Coast and was subsequently refinished in its current yellow and black configuration during restoration.

INTERIOR

The restored cabin is currently finished in green and features bucket seating with a center folding armrest.

INTERIOR DETAILS

• Green bucket seats
• Textured seat inserts
• Center front cushion and folding armrest
• Matching green door panels
• Green carpeting
• Woodgrain instrument panel trim
• Woodgrain door trim
• Round instrumentation
• 150 MPH speedometer
• Three spoke steering wheel
• Pistol Grip shifter
• Period style radio presentation

The current green interior differs from the P6XA charcoal and black premium vinyl interior specified on the surviving fender tag.

The tag also specifies C21 and C55, identifying factory bucket seating with the center front cushion and folding armrest arrangement rather than a full length center console.

WHEELS & TIRES

The GTX rides on Cragar S/S wheels fitted with staggered Cooper Cobra Radial G/T raised white letter tires.

FRONT: P215/70R15
REAR: P255/60R15

Visible DOT markings indicate 2019 tire production and measured 10/32 all around. A full size spare wheel and tire is retained in the trunk.

RESTORATION & DOCUMENTATION

The GTX underwent extensive restoration work through American Classics Restoration of Anderson, Indiana during 2018 and 2019. The shop was owned by a longtime friend of the owner’s family, and the restoration was completed at a substantially discounted rate compared with normal retail restoration pricing. Provided records document approximately $68,375 in restoration related payments.

Because of the reduced labor rates associated with the relationship, the documented expenditure does not necessarily represent the commercial value of the work performed. The owner estimates that reproducing the completed restoration at current labor, parts and material costs would exceed $100,000.

Restoration invoices, payment records and subsequent service documentation accompany the vehicle.

A September 2019 invoice additionally documents replacement of the brake master cylinder and bleeding of the braking system.

The owner believes the GTX has traveled fewer than approximately 300 miles since completion of the restoration.

TITLE & MILEAGE

The GTX is accompanied by an Indiana title showing no brands. The title lists the mileage as exempt due to the age of the vehicle.

The five digit odometer currently displays approximately 4,494 miles. True accumulated chassis mileage is unknown, and MOTORVAULT makes no representation regarding actual total mileage.

The owner reports that fewer than approximately 300 miles have been driven since completion of the restoration.

WHY WE LOVE IT

This is not presented as a concours restoration back to its original factory specification. Instead, it is a genuine U Code 1970 GTX with factory N96 Air Grabber equipment and a surviving fender tag, restored and thoughtfully modified with the intention of creating a car its owner could genuinely enjoy.

The mechanical package is where this GTX becomes especially interesting.

A period 1970 Chrysler 440 RB block built to approximately 500 CID is paired with Trick Flow aluminum heads, FAST EFI and a TREMEC TKO 600 5 speed. A Dana 60 handles power at the rear, while Wilwood brakes, QA1 components and other chassis upgrades improve the areas that matter when a vintage muscle car is actually being driven.

Its history is also refreshingly straightforward. The original factory specification is documented, the prior green repaint is known, the current yellow and black configuration is fully disclosed, and substantial paperwork remains from the restoration.

With the owner reporting fewer than approximately 300 miles since completion of the restoration, this GTX combines the unmistakable character of a big block Mopar with a drivetrain and chassis built for considerably more usable modern road manners.
